What is Kraatterijärvi?

Finnish lake landscape in summer: blue waters, green forests, wooden dock with canoe, and hiking trail in golden evening light

Kraatterijärvi is a unique geological wonder in Southern Ostrobothnia, specifically in the Alajärvi region. It is Finland’s only scientifically recognized meteorite crater, formed approximately 73 million years ago as a result of a massive meteorite impact. This circular lake has a diameter of nearly 22 kilometers, making it the sixth largest meteorite crater in Europe. Kraatterijärvi now forms a significant tourist destination, around which the Kraatterijärvi Geopark area has developed with numerous attractions and activities.

What is Kraatterijärvi?

Kraatterijärvi is a circular lake formed as a result of a meteorite impact, located in Southern Ostrobothnia in the Alajärvi city area. It is a geologically significant site, as it is Finland’s only scientifically proven meteorite crater and simultaneously one of the world’s best-preserved ancient impact craters.

The lake’s diameter is approximately 22 kilometers, and around it are located several smaller lakes and villages, which together form the so-called Lake District. The area is known for its beautiful landscapes, pristine nature, and rich cultural heritage.

Kraatterijärvi is extremely significant to the region’s identity, and it has inspired local culture, art, and industries. Around the lake, the Kraatterijärvi Geopark has developed, which promotes geological tourism in the area and increases awareness of this unique natural formation.

How was Kraatterijärvi formed?

Kraatterijärvi was formed approximately 73 million years ago when a massive meteorite struck the area of present-day Southern Ostrobothnia. The impact force was so great that it significantly reshaped the terrain and created a wide crater, which later filled with water forming the present lake.

At the moment of impact, the meteorite caused an explosion whose intensity was many times greater compared to a nuclear bomb. As a result of the strike, the bedrock was crushed and partially melted, forming special rock types that occur only in meteorite craters. These are called impactites, and they can be found in the environment surrounding the crater area.

The formation of Kraatterijärvi has been a multi-stage process. Originally, the impact created a deep pit, which over time filled with water. Ice ages and other geological processes have shaped the crater, but its circular form has remained recognizable for millions of years, which makes it geologically particularly significant.
